INTRODUCTION
In the last few years, we have heard this phrase “Atmanirbhar Bharat” in the news, government speeches and many community talks, and we also feel it in our daily life. What does this mean? Is it just about making products in India, or is it something deeper?
Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan is not just a Government scheme, but it is a movement. It is a total mindset shift at the national level – A call for every Indian to become more confident, stronger and more self-reliant while staying connected to the global world. Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan means Self-Reliant India Mission. It was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2020. This was inaugurated at thetime when COVID-19 impacted the economy of India.
Covid Lockdown made it clear and showed the harsh reality that
- Small businesses were struggling
- India depended heavily on imports
- Supply chain broke down
- Migrant workers lost their jobs
This time of crisis made India rethink its economic model.
The aim of Atmanirbhara Bharat Abhiyaan is simple as follows:
- Produce more in India
- Create job opportunity
- Reduce dependency on imports
- Support Indian businesses
- Make India a globally competitive country.
In this way Government of India is trying to strengthen the country from within.

FIVE PILLARS OF ATMANIRBHAR BHARAT ABHIYAAN:-
1. Affordability: The Annual premium of only Rs 436 makes it affordable for all sections of the Indian population.
2. Simplicity: With minimum documentation requirements, the registration process is correspondingly straightforward and user-friendly.
3. Financial Security: In case of untimely demise of the policyholder, the scheme provides a safety blanket to the family.
4. Broad reach: The scheme is accessible to all Indians, whether living in rural or urban areas. The scheme therefore ensures that it reaches to underprivileged.
WHY ATMANIRBHAR BHARAT ABHIYAAN: –
Before this mission, India was struggling with so many economic issues: –
- Small businesses were unable to grow and were deprived of financial support.

- Skilled youths did not have employment opportunities.
The pandemic, i.e., COVID-19, exposed these challenges, and the Government realised that they need to be overcome for a resilient India.
And consequently, the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan was formulated.
